This lovely Late 20th Century Porcelain Jewel Casket bears all of the hallmarks of Reg Johnson’s multi-faceted talent, not only as designer, but also as potter and painter. A small number of such presentation caskets were commissioned, the first in 1974 to mark the Centenary of Sir Winston Churchill, another for presentation by Stoke-on-Trent’s civic dignitaries to the people of Trenton, New Jersey, the centre of the American pottery industry, and another to commemorate the Royal Wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Superbly modelled and beautifully decorated, this piece offers the perfect introduction to the works of this talented Staffordshire artist, examples of whose work may now be viewed at The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery. This example signed on the cover, Reg Johnson, the underside of the base with an indistinct impressed fan shaped mark enclosing what appears to be the monogram JM, so far unidentified.
