A fine quality Victorian mahogany framed armchair, English, circa 1890, in the Chippendale style.
The chair features a well-shaped back with a finely pierced and carved splat, beneath a gently serpentine top rail enriched with foliate carving. The shaped arms terminate in scroll handrests and are supported on square section legs, all subtly carved with restrained decorative detailing. The legs are united by stretchers, giving the chair excellent strength and stability.
The seat is upholstered in rich burgundy hide leather, finished with brass studding, which complements the warm colour and patina of the mahogany frame. The chair is well proportioned, comfortable and structurally sound, making it equally suitable for use as a desk chair, hall chair or occasional armchair.
English, circa 1890.
