Description

A charming Regency rosewood pole screen, circa 1820, retaining its decorative needlework face screen.

The shaped screen is inset with an attractive period-style floral needlework panel, worked with a central bouquet and floral corner motifs in softly muted colours. The rosewood frame has a gently bowed lower edge and is surmounted by a finely carved and pierced crest with scrolling decoration.

The screen is mounted on a slender rosewood pole with a turned finial and brass adjustable fitting, allowing the height of the face screen to be altered. The pole rises from a particularly attractive turned and carved baluster support with lotus-style detailing.

Raised on a triangular platform base with concave sides, terminating in three small bun feet.

Pole screens were designed to shield the face from the direct heat of a fire and became both practical and highly decorative pieces of furniture in Regency interiors.

English, circa 1820.
