Description

A fine Regency period three-plate overmantel mirror, circa 1810, retaining its original giltwood frame with attractive age-related wear.

The rectangular frame is divided into three separate mirror plates, the central plate flanked by two narrower side panels, all set within reeded ebonised slip mouldings which provide striking contrast against the warm gilt ground. The frieze is enriched with carved classical ornament, including applied rosettes to the corner blocks and stylised anthemion and shell motifs to the uprights and central tablet — all characteristic of the refined neoclassical taste of the Regency period.

The gilding has mellowed beautifully over time, displaying a soft, burnished tone with areas of rubbing and patination consistent with over two centuries of age. This gentle wear enhances the mirror’s authenticity and decorative appeal, giving it the understated elegance so sought after in early 19th century interiors.
