A characterful pair of 18th century oak side chairs, circa 1750, with extensively bobbin-turned frames and attractive warm colour and patination.
Each chair has a tall open back formed with turned uprights and finials, enclosing a row of slender bobbin-turned spindles between substantial turned rails. The solid boarded seats are raised on turned front legs united by a matching bobbin-turned front stretcher, with plain stretchers to the sides and rear.
Constructed using traditional pegged joints, the chairs retain the wonderfully irregular surface, wear and mellow colour associated with early country furniture. The solid seats are particularly appealing and make these rather more interesting than later examples with replacement rush or upholstered seats.
A highly decorative pair with plenty of period character, equally suitable as occasional chairs or placed either side of a chest, console or fireplace.
English, circa 1750
