John Ewing was born in 1928 and immediately after the war he enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools where he was the youngest ever student up to that date. From there he took the Art Teachers Diploma and spent his working life teaching firstly in St. Albans and then Croydon. During the post war years he recorded London from many viewpoints including the Thames and the changing face of commerce on the river. This period in the 1960’s was very productive and he often exhibited with the Wapping Group who specialise in paintings of the River Thames. During this period John experimented with Modern techniques and trends with abstraction and constructional works of high quality.
At the same time he was having regular exhibitions at the Piccadilly Gallery in Cork Street, the Camden Arts Centre and the Mall Galleries. Outside of London he exhibited at the Holkham Arts centre and in Sevenoaks.
His art displays a high technical level of composition and drama coupled with a freedom of movement and colour.
