Elegant Indian miniature portrait painted on ivory, depicting a Mughal noblewoman in three-quarter profile. She wears an elaborate jewelled turban with a large fan-shaped crest, layered pearl necklaces, ornate earrings and rich brocade garments. The translucent watercolours beautifully utilise the natural glow of the ivory. This finely painted miniature belongs to the late Delhi School, from the final phase of Mughal artistic tradition in 19th-century India (circa 1840–1860).

A charming and well-executed example of Indian court miniature painting on ivory, ideal for collectors of Orientalist art and historical miniatures.

Provinance: Purchased in the mid 20th century on the antiques market in Vienna (Austria). The object has been in Europe for several decades.
