A charming late Victorian watercolour by H. Medlycott, depicting the Houses of Parliament and the River Thames in 1895.
The atmospheric composition captures the bustling river in the late 19th century, with sailing barges, a steam tug and riverside buildings set against the imposing Gothic architecture of the Palace of Westminster and Victoria Tower.
Painted in a delicate palette of warm ochres, soft greys and muted blues, with particularly attractive detailing to the boats and their reflections in the water.
Signed H. Medlycott and dated 1895 to the lower left.
Presented in a substantial giltwood frame, retaining the original trade label of Charles D. Sharp, picture frame maker and artists’ colourman of 1 Sussex Villas, Kensington, London, to the reverse.
A decorative and evocative view of Victorian London, appealing to collectors of London topographical and maritime watercolours.
