A superb quality late Victorian walnut bookcase, stamped Gillow & Co, Lancaster, c.1890. This elegant and well-proportioned piece displays all the craftsmanship for which Gillows are renowned.
The upper section features two beautifully carved frieze drawers, each with pierced foliate panels and bold brass ring handles — a classic Gillow detail rarely found on bookcases of this size. The drawers are hand-dovetailed and run smoothly, offering discreet storage above the glazed cabinet.
Below, a pair of original glazed doors open to reveal three adjustable shelves, ideal for books or curated display.
The bookcase is framed by turned and reeded architectural columns and stands on a solid plinth base. The walnut timber has a warm, rich colour with a well-preserved patina.
