Description
A most attractive Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Copper Measure of Quart capacity, the body engraved with the legend “1 Quart” in script, brazed seams, illegible Excise Stamps, the underside bearing the Maker’s Mark of an Orb and Cross, the logo of Benham and Froude { 1855 – 1906 }, of Chandos Street, London, together with a small “heart” icon. Originally founded in 1785 by John Kepp, the famous “Orb” was adopted as a trademark, because in 1821 the firm made the present cross on the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral, 23 feet high and weighing seven tons, and this could be seen from their London shop. For a more comprehensive history of this firm, see the article, “The Sign of the Orb and Cross”, by Jeremy T. Stedman, { Antique Collecting ~ Vol. 16 ~ No. 9, published in February 1982 – Our Stock Ref. AC169F1982-XX }.
