Description
A good, Mid 18th Century Antique English Georgian Lead Table Tobacco Box and Cover of the type sometimes referred to as “community boxes”, they being intended for use in company. Designed to keep the tobacco moist, this would originally have had a second, internal lid, now missing, to keep the contents compressed. The cover decorated with an attractive design of tobacco leaves and flowers, the finial in the form of an African slave’s head. Now quite properly and understandably deemed politically incorrect, the device of a “Black Virginian” was used for many years to designate the premises of tobacconists.
