Description
A most attractive Late 20th Century pastoral watercolour by Reginald Johnson, “Above Llyn Celyn” in the valley of the River Tryweryn, Gwynedd, North Wales. Apparently unsigned and undated, this view, looking North-East from a point above what is now Llyn Celyn reservoir may have been intended by the artist as a preparatory sketch for a larger painting. Created in the early 1960’s, to meet Liverpool’s demand for water, the reservoir project caused outrage amongst the Nationalist community in Wales which continues to this day, helping fuel the political rise of Gwynfor Evans and Plaid Cymru. For the ongoing legacy of this controversy see Cofiwch Dryweryn. Presented here in a contemporary glazed and moulded giltwood frame.
