Nikolajs Lečmanis (1904–1986) – poet, Latvian army officer, editor and journalist.
Born in Madliena. Studied at a local school, studied chemistry at the Latvian State Technical School, graduated from the Latvian Military School and was associated with the Latvian army since 1929.
First literary debuts during school years, first publications since 1925 (published until 1928). He turned to writing again in exile, living in Germany.
Participated in the editorial staff of the Latvian newspaper “Latvija”. Personal experiences of war, captivity and refugee life are reflected in the collection of miniatures “Soldier’s Unsent Letters” (1947).
The collections of poems “Star in the Window” (1962), “I Walk in My Light” (1968), and “I in the World Market” (1976) are characterized by an echo of the experience of world modernists without the protest loudness of the younger generation of exiled poets or empty declarations of patriotism.
