An atmospheric early 20th-century mixed media painting of Pump Court, within London’s historic Temple district, by British artist J. F. Barry Pittar (1880–1948).
The composition depicts the picturesque courtyard enclosed by historic buildings, with mature trees, traditional lamp posts and figures walking through the courtyard and beneath an archway. Executed in a beautifully restrained palette of soft ochres, warm browns and muted greys, the work captures the quiet atmosphere and architectural character of this historic corner of London.
The delicate treatment of light and shadow, together with the loosely rendered figures and finely observed architectural details, gives the scene a wonderfully evocative quality.
J. F. Barry Pittar studied at St John’s Wood School of Art and the Royal College of Art. An accomplished architectural artist and ceramic designer, he was particularly recognised for his architectural subjects and exhibited at the Fine Art Society and the Paris Salon.
