A mid-Victorian mahogany campaign writing slope or lap desk, dating to circa 1850.
Of rectangular form, the case is extensively fitted with brass strapwork and protective brass corner mounts, characteristic of pieces designed for travel. The hinged case opens to reveal a fitted writing interior with a burgundy tooled leather writing surface, together with various compartments for writing implements and accessories.
The writing surface lifts to provide further storage beneath, while a concealed side drawer fitted with a recessed brass handle provides additional useful storage.
The mahogany has developed a warm, rich colour and attractive grain, complemented particularly well by the aged brass fittings. The piece retains the expected signs of age and use, including wear to the leather writing surface and brass, which add considerably to its character.
A decorative and increasingly collectable piece of 19th-century campaign furniture, equally appealing displayed closed or opened on a desk or library table.
Circa 1850.
