A fine and decorative early 19th century French mantel clock, dating to circa 1830, the movement signed “Charles à Orléans.”
The architectural case is constructed from richly figured green onyx, with a rounded top and stepped plinth base. The front is embellished with an attractive gilt-bronze mount in the form of ribbon-tied drapery and tassels.
The circular dial has a finely engine-turned gilt centre surrounded by a white enamel chapter ring with Roman numerals, enclosed within a decorative rope-twist gilt bezel. The dial is signed Charles à Orléans.
The two-train movement is accessed through a glazed door to the reverse and strikes on a bell.
A particularly attractive French mantel clock, combining the beautifully figured translucent green onyx with restrained gilt-metal decoration.
French, circa 1830.
