A very attractive and elegant set of six French cherrywood dining chairs, dating to circa 1880.
Crafted in beautifully figured cherrywood, these late 19th century chairs display the warm, honeyed tones and fine grain that make French cherry so highly prized. Each chair features a shaped top rail with subtle inlaid diamond motif detail, above a distinctive fretted and pierced bar back incorporating delicate turned elements — a charming decorative feature typical of provincial French design of the period.
The chairs stand on square tapered legs to the front, with gently swept rear legs for comfort and stability. The frames are well proportioned and refined, offering a light yet sturdy presence suitable for both formal and informal dining spaces.
The seats are generously upholstered and finished with braid edging, providing comfort and practicality. They could easily be recovered to suit a contemporary interior scheme, though the current upholstery remains in serviceable condition.
