Made during the British colonial period in Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka), this rare 19th century basket showcases exotic materials that were highly prized in Victorian interiors.
The basket’s open rectangular frame is formed from rich ebony hardwood, prized for its density and dark hue. Its base is intricately inlaid with delicate bone dots arranged in a symmetrical floral mandala, encased within a geometric border.
What sets this piece apart is its radiating porcupine quill construction, with natural tones ranging from deep chestnut to honey blonde. These ethically harvested quills were a signature decorative element in Ceylonese colonial furniture.
The result is a striking decorative object that is both useful and artistic.
In good condition, with some inlay missing, ready for use.
