A rare and interesting Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Child’s Alphabet Plate, “B Was a Butcher”. While the subject matter might perhaps nowadays be considered a little dark, such plates were once commonplace aids to learning, possibly drawing inspiration from the earlier “Merry Man” plates. Many were inspired by Nursery Rhymes, less regarded in today’s world of mobile phones and computers, but perennially popular with children throughout the nineteenth century. The flavour of this bygone world may still be savoured today online at Gutenberg’s “The Nursery Rhymes of England” ~
