Very attractive vintage World map by Ernest Dudley

printed in black on sepia coloured paper; 46 x 61 cm’, folds down to 21 x 15 cm. folds a issued; some pin holes in corners; edges slightly frayed in places; 2 small holes within image; vg cond.
This exceptionally attractive pictorial map shows the Wonders of this World: famous sites, National treasures, animals and indigeous people – modern and ancient, with small insets with short description, designed and drawn by Ernest Dudley Chase. There is a large compass rose in the lower right part and the map is surrounded by a border and decorative corners. The map is based on Mercator’s projection as stated in a small cartouche. – There are some copies of this map with a coloured compass rose.
Ernest Dudley Chase was born in Lowell, MA, and received his initial artistic training from his father, a wallpaper designer who asked him for sketches for interiors. Later on, he finished his training at the Lowell Textile School and Vesper George Art School, Boston. In 1900, he joined a printing company in his native town before in 1906, he moved to Boston working for another printing company. In 1908, he founded his own company, designing and printing greeting cards for a ‘better-class trade’. Eventually, he started a sideline in designing and producing maps, and by the mid-1940s, he had accumulated enough maps to produce a catalogue ‘The Ernest Dudley Chase Decorative Pictorial Novelty Maps’. He retired in 1958.
