William IV Rosewood Library / Side Table SAI2873

Description

Quality William IV rosewood library table attributed to Gillows. The oblong top has stunning graining, rounded corners and an “egg” carved edge. Its two mahogany lined drawers in the frieze have hand cut dovetail joints, original brass locks and rosewood handles. There is also dummy drawers to the back. Below the drawers the edging matches the egg carving on the top which does have a egg missing (shown in photo)but this is to the back and does nothing to diminish the absolute beauty of this table. Its two boldly turned supports with carved gadroon centres end on platform bases with incredibly carved lion feet. The outstanding quality of the construction, the wood used and the identical proportions of this table compared to those illustrated in the Gillows book leads us to attribute it as a ‘Gillows’ table despite the missing stamp mark.
