Description
This fine Antique Victorian sterling silver smooth vesta case was manufactured in 1895 by Stokes & Ireland. There is a nicely engraved 1896 on one side of the vesta and and a somewhat faded inscription on the reverse.
Overall, this case is in a lovely condition. It has a few minor surface scratches but nothing major and these could be professionally ironed out if desired. Personally, we quite like a couple of small reminders of the age of a piece like this which is 125 years old!
The hallmarks for the assay office – Birmingham, England – and the assay date (1895) are clear on both the rim and inside the lid. The maker’s mark for Stokes and Ireland (S. I. ltd) is also clear. Stokes and Ireland was formed between William Henry Stokes & Arthur George Ireland of Great Hampton Street, Birmingham in 1872.
This is a piece of history to house your keepsakes or a small book of matches. A really classic historical piece ready to be snapped up!
