This outstanding Victorian oak open bookcase, designed in the Gothic Revival style and very much in the manner of A.W.N. Pugin, is a superb example of mid‑19th‑century craftsmanship. The boldly carved frieze lifts to reveal a concealed storage compartment, a wonderfully characteristic touch of the period’s love of symbolism, secrecy, and architectural detail.

The bookcase is arranged in two generous bays, fitted with eight adjustable shelves, each with ribbed fronts and lined in fabric. Flanking the shelves are two finely carved pillars, one of which cleverly opens to reveal an additional set of three hidden shelves — a rare and highly practical feature.

Raised on a stepped plinth base, the piece has real architectural presence, with its deep carving, strong vertical lines, and rich, warm oak colouring. It offers both grandeur and versatility: ideal for a distinguished library, a curated collection of books, or the display of treasured objects with real authority.
