William 1V bowfront figured mahogany chest of two over three drawers. Original handles, excellent condition. Finely figured mahogany. This is not just another antique chest of drawers, it’s a William 1V period mahogany chest of drawers. William IV period was from 1830-1837 and has a distinct style unto its own, (transitional) A kind of halfway house between Regency and Victorian. Distinctly styled to this very small seven-year period before our furniture became full blooded Victorian
This William IV chest explained. (Transitional).
The top of this chest of drawers is 3/4″ (thin) is carried from the Georgian finer furniture period, Victorian tops are 7/8″ as timber quality reduced. The knobs are formed in late Regency style. The bracket foot plinth is a mix of Georgian with some curvy Victorian connotations, The flanking pillars where more transition is taking place becoming more Victorian although still a touch thinner than Victorians would have made them. The escutcheons, pronounced, distinctly early 19th century. The highest quality figured mahogany soon after this period no longer used as everyday timber, it became reserved for the finer pieces where it was used far more sparingly.
The most important thing that defines this as William IV are the veneers. The timbers used here were of the commercial figured South American top quality mahogany timbers to be used in this country.
