One of the most sought after plates from Ogilby’s Britannia: this is plate no. 1 which shows one of the earliest depictions of a waywiser, an instrument for measuring distances. It covers the route from London to Abersytwyth via Harrow, Uxbridge, Amersham, Beaconsfield, High Wickham, Oxford and Islip. The route to Aberystwyth is completed on two following sheets though each map can stand on its own.
Ogilby (1600-1676) was a Scottish translator and cartographer who is best known for publishing the first British strip road atlas.
