Description

This is a very rare pair of English sterling silver preserve/jam/condiment jars made during the lifetime of Christopher Dresser at the firm that he worked with for many years.

This pair of glass jars with sterling silver lids and original spoons have a very pleasing aesthetic appeal as they are a wonderful, rotund or barrel shape.

Christopher Dresser was from a Yorkshire family and was born in Scotland is now widely known as one of the first and most important, independent designers. He was a pivotal figure in the Aesthetic Movement and is widely accepted as a major contributor to the allied Anglo-Japanese or Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style), both of which originated in England and had long-lasting international influence.

The marks are for John Thomas Heath and John Hartsghorne Middleton for Hukin & Heath, London mark registered in 1886.

The hallmarks are as follows:

Makers – JTH over JHM

Lion Passant – Sterling Silver

Leopard’s Head – London

Year Letter – Lowercase ‘d’ for 1899

Please note that these marks appear on both spoons and ONE of the lids.

The other lid has a Birmingham hallmark with the 1899 year letter ‘z’ and the anchor. The lid matches the other one and does not appear to be a replacement. There may have been a supply/delivery issue at the time of manufacture. This is a negligible issue.

Single, silver plated preserve jars are selling for over £100 including ones made long after Dresser was dead.

Despite being made over 120 years ago, they look amazing and modern.

The design is simple yet elegant.

They fit wonderfully in the palm of your hand and your fingers just curl around that curvaceous bulge!

They are in very good condition with no chips, cracks or repairs.

There are some small scratches but these are commensurate with age and use and do not detract from the overall beautiful appearance and good condition.

The one shown in the last image is for information only.

Please note that it is a SINGLE example (not a pair) and it was made several years after Dresser had died whereas the PAIR we are offering were made during Dresser’s lifetime.

UK insured and tracked postage is included in the price.
