RARE & beautiful Islamic Bronze Belt Fitting c1,000 years old
This amazing artefact is made of bronze with a wonderful Kufic inscription.
It is difficult to capture the beauty of this delightful little artefact with a camera as only the human eye can appreciate the amazing detail and the surface patination.
This is a wonderful piece of Islamic ancient art that fits into your pocket!
The inscription is typical of the period and reads: “Al Malik” which translates into “The King” or “Owner of Sovereignty”.
This ancient Islamic artefact is guaranteed to be genuine and over 1,000 years old.
There are two bronze belt fittings that are exactly the same as this piece in the Metropolitan Museum of Art that were excavated in an ancient town called Nishapur which was in the North of Iran. It was abandoned after an earthquake 750 years ago.
This bronze belt fitting would have been made for a wealthy merchant or leading religious figure. You have to keep in mind that most people could not even afford a proper belt never mind having one decorated with such luxury in ancient times.
Whoever originally wore this beautiful belt fitting must have been very pious and spiritual as they chose one of God’s attributes as an inscription and did not have it made in gold as gold is forbidden for men in the faith of Islam as gold is a sign of pride and ostentatiousness.
From a Private US collector acquired in the 1970’s.
This rare and beautiful belt fitting measures 30mm x 20mm.
Please note that the surface of this artefact shows wear commensurate with age and origin. Most of the gold/gilding has worn off just as those in the Metropolitan Museum (full details available on request). Genuine antique Islamic accessories are very difficult to find and such a delightful piece as this will make and amazing addition to any collection.
This piece could be made into a pendant, brooch or bracelet converting it into a unique wearable piece of ancient art.
