Description

This is a RARE & delightful little box in the shape of the head of a Victorian comic character known as Ally Sloper.

It is fully hallmarked as follows:

DS over S in a shield – David Shaw Silverware Limited
Lion Passant – sterling silver
Leopard’s head – London
D cursive letter- 1978

Please note that there are also two hallmarks on the hat: the lion passant and the leopard’s head: this was standard practice on items that were made of two or more pieces.

David Shaw Silverware Limited only registered as silversmiths in 1978 so this is from their first year of production. They dissolved their company sometime in the early 1990’s.

This wonderful little work of art feels amazing in the hand – it has a great solid weight of 27.6g and measures 6cm long x 4cm x 1cm.

There is even a registration number partly visible on the collar – I can make out “Rd xxxxxxx”. There is no striker part so this was probably made more for decorative than practical purposes….not sure who would be using a vesta in the 1970’s!

This one being offered here is heavier than the one shown in the last image provided above (for information only).

In very good, clean condition as shown in the images above: opens and closes nicely.
