This is a rare and delightful Sinhalese (Ceylon/Sri Lanka) genuine antique that dates from the mid 19th century making it around 150 years old!
This type of antique does not appear on the market with often. There is currently another example that is UNMOUNTED available for £500 (see last image provided for information).
It has a socketed fitting that would have been attached to a very long pole.
This is a very good quality, cast brass, heavy gauge wonderfully decorated antique. It has a pair of Hamsa birds that have their heads turned away while their bodies are facing each other.
The Hamsa bird is an ancient symbol of purity, detachment and wisdom in many cultures throughout Asia. This type of item was used to guard the Chiefs of the Sinhalese people (please see images provided of the Chiefs of Kandy/Candy in nineteenth century Ceylon).
This delightful and rare work of art is from a private collection.
