SOLD: Rare 12th century bronze lion footed incense tray Islamic period Persia

This is an exquisite and rare three footed bronze incense tray that is guaranteed to be over 900 years old.

It is a documented type (there is a similar one in the Berlin Museum as shown in the last image above) with three delightful lion shaped feet.

We have sold and observed numerous small trays of this type without feet and it is clear that the animal footed type are much rare and very difficult to locate in good condition.

The inside of the tray has roundels separating panels containing beautiful elongated Kufic benedictory inscriptions. There is some wonderful gold inlay on the inscription and on central boss which is an “endless knot” motif.

On the outside there are some running hounds between circular motifs.

There is some wonderful ancient patina on this amazing artefact with reddish-copper hues visible among the deep bronze colour. This incense tray is in very good, undamaged and unrepaired condition. We have seen similar trays with extensive corrosion sell for several thousand pounds.

Please note that this exquisite and rare early Islamic footed tray featured on the famous “Antiques Roadtrip” in 2010 where it was shown to James Braxton (Baildon, 2010).

This delightful piece has a diameter of 18cm and stands 8cm high.

This beautiful ancient Islamic work of art is from a Private North of England collection acquired in the 1970’s.
