PAULINE DELACROIX GARNIERĀ ( 1863 – 1912 )

A stunningly beautiful and large signed oil on canvas by Pauline Delacroix Garnier depicting a mother feeding her two children and their dog in a kitchen interior. The work is in its original frame and signed lower right. The canvas is unlined and there are extensive exhibition and artists labels verso. A wonderful example of this painters work – she was the wife of Jules Garnier and was acclaimed for her paintings of motherhood and domestic life in 19th century France. She was one of the most prominent female painters of the late 19th century in Paris. A most highly collected painter.

Pauline Delacroix-Garnier was the sister of Jules Garnier, who taught her to paint watercolours, and the wife of Henry EugĆØne Delacroix who taught her to draw and paint.

Her paintings are a celebration of the joys of motherhood and domestic life but she also painted portraits and less feminine subjects such as Meal Time or Man Eating Polenta. Other works by Delacroix-Garnier include: An Obliging Listener: The Lion Become Old (1880); Marie the Gardener (1891); Mers Beach (1893); Woman Reading (1894); Two Smiles (1895); Far from Paris (1896); A Game of Cards; ‘Quinte et quatorze’ (1897) and Jules Garnier – M. Descombes – M. Monchicourt.. She exhibited at the Salon des Artistes FranƧais from 1880 until her death. In 1895 Pauline Delacroix-Garnier was awarded the Grand Prix by the Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs (union of women painters and sculptors), of which she became vice president. In 1909 she received a bronze medal at the Paris Salon. She was also made an Officier d’AcadĆ©mie. She published a Self-taught Watercolour Course in Three Stages ( Cours d’Aquarelle, en Trois Ɖtats, Sans Professeur).
