Description

Circa 1750. A large pair of mahogay framed library chairs, by repute, made by ‘Alexander Peters’, with arched backs, seat and arms upholstered in ribbed horse hair, held in place by close brass studding, the padded arms supported shaped and curved uprights, resting on four square tapering legs with a chamfer on the inside, back legs slightly out swept all braced by conforming stretchers with the original brass and leather castors beneath.

‘Alexander Peter was the most accomplished Scottish cabinet-maker of his generation. His first known commission was in 1733 for the Earl of Islay, later the Duke of Argyll, who remained loyal throughout his life. Among his other numerous aristocratic patrons was, of course, the Earl of Dumfries.’
