A handsome pair of early 20th‑century ecclesiastical oak chairs by J. W. Cook & Sons Ltd of Edinburgh, specialists in church furnishing during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. These chairs were originally supplied to Caputh Parish Church in Perthshire, a historic Church of Scotland parish with roots stretching back over a thousand years. Beautifully carved in the Gothic Revival manner, each chair features a high back with a central cross motif framed by foliate and geometric detailing, topped with a row of crisp triangular cresting. The arms are gently shaped, the seats broad and comfortable, and the whole supported on sturdy square legs — a design intended for decades of service in the chancel or vestry. Crafted in solid oak with the warm, honest patina that only a century of use can produce, these chairs embody the restrained dignity typical of Scottish ecclesiastical furniture between c.1900 and 1920. The underside of one retains the impressed maker’s mark for J. W. Cook & Sons Ltd, Church Furnishers, Edinburgh, providing excellent provenance.
