flying messenger of the gods Hermes sculpture after the famous Giovanni da Bologna’s famous “Flying Mercury”, known as Hermes in Greek, depicts the Greek messenger of the gods as he soars through the air. The artist produced four versions of this statue. The statue offered here is the Paris version. Mercury is depicted with a winged Petasos hat on his head and winged sandals, both of which together give him speed in flight. In his hand he holds the caduceus, also known as the wand of Hermes, the magic wand given to him by Apollo, which has come to symbolise the practice of medicine.
