Description

A charming late medieval stirrup ring, bronze, probably silver gilt when made. The original gem probably a sapphire being lost in antiquity, and now replaced by a modern synthetic gem in sapphire blue.

Stirrup rings originated asĀ  Bishops “Rings of Office” around the 6th or 7th century., with the name deriving from the obvious similarity to a horse stirrup. Used in both sacred and decorative contexts from the 12th century until the 19th century.

Cleaned and conserved, this terrific artifact is ready to meet its new owner, and continue the journey.
