Juan de Palau Buixo was born in Catalonia, shortly before his family moved to Zaragoza in 1920. As a young man, Palau studied architecture, but he quickly became fascinated by art after frequently visiting the painting galleries of the Prado Museum, as well as meeting Santiago Rusiñol, who helped him shape his career as a painter. The artist developed a particular interest in the great Spanish and Dutch masters. in 1936, before the war erupted, Palau returned to his native Catalonia, joining the Republican Army. Three years later, when the war was over, he settled in Banyoles, where he dedicated himself to painting and drawing, developing his breathtaking, delicate style and painting his surrounding landscapes, cities and towns. Auction prices for Palau’s paintings of a similar size have sold up to £3000.
