Japanese Carved Wooden Bear with Cub SAI4309

A wonderfully expressive Japanese carved wooden bear, worked from a single block of timber in the traditional Kibori Kuma style. The bear is shown in a protective, nurturing pose, carrying her bear cub — a rarer and especially charming variation within Hokkaidō folk carving. The carver has used bold, rhythmic chisel strokes to create the textured fur, giving the piece movement and vitality, while the cub is smoothly modelled for contrast and tenderness.
The underside retains the original hand‑cut tool marks, a hallmark of authentic folk carving and a reminder of its fully hand‑made origin. The sculpture has great presence and personality, capturing both the strength of the mother and the gentle vulnerability of the cub.
