One of Britain’s leading flower painters. With her bold and fluid brushstrokes and wonderful observation her work allows the viewer to sense the life-force within her plant subjects. Anne Cotterill was born in the Borders of Scotland, educated in Edinburgh and graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1956. She was awarded a postgraduate scholarship to continue her work in Edinburgh followed by a travelling scholarship to Europe that enabled her to study the work and technique of the great traditional painters. She married in the early 1960’s and moved to West Somerset where the flowers of the countryside became a source of inspiration.
She had many successful exhibitions of her work, including solo exhibitions at Thompson’s Gallery, (London) in November 1998 and October 2001, and regular collections at the Wykeham Gallery (Stockbridge, Hampshire), the Napier Gallery (Jersey), Thompson’s Gallery (Aldeburgh), the City Gallery (London) and the Bellflower Gallery (Colyton, Devon).
Times Obituary November 2010 “She built up a large and dedicated following of collectors from all works of life: her exhibitions sold out, sometimes within an hour of opening, with buyers queuing round the block”.
