Exquisite & Rare DECAGONAL Moorish Alhambra carved table Calligraphy c1890 Islamic
This is a beautifully carved and inlaid table as shown in the images above.
What makes this unusual and much rarer that the typical rectangular tables of similar size is that this one has a decagonal top and a wonderfully shaped lower shelf.
The top is delightfully decorated with deeply carved geometric designs and calligraphic sections. A lot of work has gone into making this wonderful piece of furniture.
There is some delicate and intricate fretwork on the panels that adorn each leg.
Tables of this type were made in Egypt and Syria between 1850-1920 and retailed at Liberty & Co in London. Many European travellers bought them back after visiting the “Holy Land” (Egypt/Sinai, Palestine/Bethlehem, Syria and Jordan) when Thomas Cook made access to the region affordable for the emerging Victorian middle class.
The is a very attractive and functional work of art – it can just sit and look pretty or would look amazing with a vase or Oriental sculpture (NOT to be used for plants: so many of these tables have been ruined over the decades by water leaking from plants pots).
This exquisitely carved table is guaranteed at least 100 years old.
This beautiful table is of a very good size: 27” height x 22” widest point across the top (dimensions provided are approximate – please contact for exact measurements).

This table is solid and stable but needs a little TLC, although even as it stands it is a very attractive work of art. The top has losses to the inlay and some of the central wood sections are missing as shown. There was some woodworm that we treated a few years ago and it is no longer active. If this table were in better condition it was command a much higher price.
