A charming Edwardian mahogany envelope card table in excellent antique condition, combining elegant decorative detail with practical functionality. The square top is formed as a classic envelope card table, the four triangular leaves folding out to reveal a green baize-lined playing surface beneath.
When closed, the top is centred by a striking marquetry medallion, richly inlaid with scrolling neo-classical arabesques, stylised foliate motifs and delicate husk ornament. Executed in satinwood, boxwood and stained fruitwoods, the intricate design is skilfully arranged across the four envelope leaves, forming a harmonious and perfectly balanced composition. The contrasting veneers stand out beautifully against the warm mahogany ground, reflecting the refined craftsmanship and Sheraton Revival influence so popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
The frieze houses a useful drawer, further enriched with fine inlay and fitted with attractive brass handles. Raised on elegant square tapering legs, each finely decorated with urns, harebells and neo-classical ornament, the table is united by graceful shaped stretchers converging upon a turned central finial. Original brass castors provide ease of movement.
Beautifully proportioned and showcasing exceptional cabinet-making throughout, this versatile piece functions equally well as a lamp table, side table or occasional table while retaining its original purpose as an elegant card table.
