This is a truly magnificent quality substantial-sized oil painting on canvas depicting a wonderful winter snow covered landscape scene with local people gathering at the church for the festive carol service on Christmas Day, 1857.

The exceptionally well-executed painting was taken from an original work by British listed artist John Ritchie (1821-1879).

As a very favourable artist during the 19th century, Richie specialized in such amazing scenes.
Indeed, he titled this particular work ”Christmas Day, 1857”.

The example on offer was painted during the 1930s by a follower of the artist.

Artist John Ritchie (1857 – 1875) was a genre painter who exhibited at the RA and elsewhere. Usually his scenes were imaginary and used 16 / 17th C costumes in a panoramic style. His masterpiece is considered to be: [Summer Day in Hyde Park]
