SOLD: Beautiful Pottery Medieval Chess or Gaming Piece in male form
Possibly Southern Italy / Sicily Norman Period
This little gentleman is made of unglazed pottery and is hollow on the inside. It is clear that he has been made to stand freely as he has a cylindrical body which places the weight in a balanced way onto the base.
You can see some amazing detail on this small piece such as the wonderfully depicted facial features including the eyes, nose, mouth and hair. This delightful work of art has been designed to be touched and picked up. Your thumb and fingertip just wrap around the recess under the chin – this piece is so tactile!
The cap is the type that was worn during the Norman period.
Please note that this stunning work of art is in overall wonderful condition. There is some minor ancient loss to the tip of the nose but this is just a part of the history and character of this piece.
This amazing gaming piece stands just 5cm in height.
