Description

Victorian Silver MIZPAH brooch with Birmingham hallmark for 1888.

The connotation of the word MIZPAH implied an emotional bond between people who become separated from each other and Mizpah jewellery was worn to emphasize this bond. The interpretation of the word was ”the Lord watch between me and thee when we are absent one from another”.

This oval brooch is decorated with small balls surrounding it, a style repeated in Victorian silver and gold jewellery. Above and below the MIZPAH is scroll work and the hallmark is at the back. The pin is secure and fits into a c clasp.

It measures 3.5 cm long x 2cm wide. There is a small amount of unevenness on the front that is barely noticeable.
