Description
A remarkable Anglo-Indian Burmese hardwood console table in very good antique condition. Expertly hand-carved throughout, this impressive piece showcases the extraordinary craftsmanship for which Anglo-Indian furniture is renowned.
The demi-lune form is richly adorned with intricate pierced and relief-carved decoration, featuring scrolling foliate vines, exotic birds, and peacocks amidst dense foliage. The shaped back is equally impressive, centred by a finely carved peacock medallion surrounded by elaborate openwork ornament.
The frieze and supports are lavishly decorated with further foliate carving and bold ram’s head masks, while the table stands on substantial scrolling legs beautifully carved with acanthus and leaf motifs. The rich Burmese hardwood has acquired a deep, lustrous patina that wonderfully highlights the intricate carving throughout.
Both sculptural and functional, this outstanding console table would make a superb statement piece in a hallway, drawing room, conservatory, or grand interior. The table is currently fitted with a protective glass top, allowing the elaborate carvings to be fully appreciated while providing a practical display surface.
