SOLD: 3 x Rare & Beautiful Mughal India chess pieces c1650
These are very desirable and collectible item gaming pieces possibly chess or a local game known as Shatranj.
It is very difficult to capture the intricate detail on these works of art and they are much more attractive in person.
The photographs do not do justice to the rich colour and detail on these delightful pieces.
They are made of various materials: a marble base and ribbed ivory body that is inset with glass set on tiny brass circles.
The marble base provides a solid base and allows the piece to be slid across the gaming board.
These pieces would have belonged to someone important.
They are a delight to hold with the coldness of the marble underside and the warmth and delicateness of the main body of the piece which is ribbed and wonderfully shaped.
The overall appearance is reminiscent of the domes on mosques and palaces in India.
Each piece has been gilded giving an air of luxury.
A lot of skill and craftmanship has gone into making these gaming pieces and they are in excellent condition with very minor loss of gilding and a few of the glass inset pieces are missing.
However, these are minor blemishes that one would expect from such an antique piece.
Each piece stands 30mm tall with a diameter of 32mm.
