18th-century mahogany longcase clock with eight-day musical movement on eight bells by Daniel Quare (c1648-1724). Royal Clockmaker to George I.

18th-century mahogany longcase clock case with an eight-day musical clock with a movement on eight bells, by Dan Quare. A 12-inch break arch dial with a face mask. Foliate spandrels with subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, silvered chapter ring, signed – Dan Quare, London. Break arch with ‘Old Father Time’ rocker in a quality George 111 mahogany case with inlaid marquetry decoration. Arched door and panelled plinth, domed hood with fluted columns shaped pediment and three eagle and ball finials.

Size; 237cm overall height (weights, pendulum and winding key present).

Dan Quare born c1648-1724) As quaker he rose from obscure and humble origins in Somerset to become one of the most illustrious clockmakers of England’s golden age of horology. He had difficulty in accepting the office of Royal clockmaker to Geroge 1 but resolved this by way of agreeing to enter the Palace through back stairs. Also known for his barometer patent in c1695. There are clocks from Dan Quare displayed in the Royal Collection.  A most celebrated maker in many Worldwide and Royal collections.
