Description
A charming late Victorian oil on canvas by Jessie Hamilton, signed and dated 1899. The painting depicts a charming travelling encampment set within a tranquil rural landscape, with two horse-drawn caravans, a tent and figures engaged in everyday domestic activities beside a small campfire.
Painted with a pleasing palette of soft greens, blues and earth tones, the composition captures a peaceful glimpse of country life at the close of the 19th century. The artist has skilfully balanced the figures, caravans and landscape to create a scene rich in narrative interest and atmosphere, while the winding pathway and distant cottages draw the eye through the composition.
The painting is presented in an attractive ornate gilt frame which complements the warmth and character of the work. Signed lower right “Jessie Hamilton” and dated 1899. A wonderfully evocative example of Victorian genre painting, celebrating rural life and the enduring appeal of the travelling community.
Jessie Hamilton was an artist active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for landscape and figurative subjects.
