Description
A handsome early Victorian mahogany secretaire chest of drawers of generous proportions, presented in excellent antique condition and displaying a wonderfully rich, mellow patina acquired over many years of careful use.
The chest is arranged with six short drawers above four long graduated drawers, providing an abundance of practical storage. One of the lower short drawers conceals a beautifully fitted secretaire interior, thoughtfully designed with an arrangement of pigeonholes, stationery compartments and a pull-out writing surface lined in its original green baize. This charming feature transforms the chest into a highly functional writing desk while maintaining its elegant appearance.
Crafted from finely selected mahogany, the drawer fronts are enhanced with striking rosewood crossbanding, creating a pleasing contrast and beautifully framing each drawer. The chest retains its original turned mahogany knob handles, while the drawers run smoothly throughout. Raised on a substantial plinth base, the piece possesses both elegance and presence.
Combining exceptional storage with the added versatility of a fitted secretaire, this fine Victorian chest would make a superb addition to a bedroom, study, library or drawing room, representing the quality craftsmanship and thoughtful design for which the period is celebrated.
