Oak Longcase/ Grandfather Clock signed Jn° Smith, Macclesfd – SAI4286

A superb 18th‑century carved oak longcase clock, richly worked throughout and showing the deep, mellow colouring that only centuries of careful polishing can produce. The long trunk is beautifully carved.
The hood is equally striking, with bold mouldings and carved detail that draw the eye to the dial. The gilt brass dial features Roman numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial and elegant pierced filigree hands, and is signed Jn° Smith, Macclesfd. The spandrels are richly decorated, adding further refinement to the composition.
Inside, the clock retains its original two‑train weight‑driven movement, complete with brass wheelwork and a large bell for striking the hours. The mechanism is clean, well‑made and entirely typical of late 18th‑century construction, offering the reassuring solidity expected of clocks from this era.
