Hand‑Carved Japanese Bear Sculpture SAI4258

A finely carved Japanese wooden bear, worked from a single block of timber and displaying the bold, textural carving characteristic of Hokkaidō Ainu folk sculpture. The bear is captured mid‑stride with its jaws open, teeth and tongue crisply defined, and the fur rendered through expressive chisel work that gives the piece movement. The natural grain of the wood enhances the sense of life in the animal, catching the light across the ridged surface.
The underside shows the honest, hand‑cut tool marks of the carver — a reminder of its traditional, fully hand‑made origin.
